Many gardeners think that conifers won’t grow in the shade, but in fact there are a few types that are well suitable for semi-shady spots and even shade. This select group includes yew (Taxus spp.), hemlocks (Tsuga spp.) and the Russian cypress (Microbiota decussate), all of which grow in deep shade in the wild and just as easily in shady gardens.
Use them in shady spots where you want some greenery 12 months a year, as the great advantage of conifers is, of course, that they stay beautiful all year long.
