Bromeliad growing as an epiphyte.

An epiphyte is a plant that grows harmlessly on another plant, usually a tree or shrub, and derives its moisture and nutrients from the air, rain, and debris accumulating around it. An epiphyte is not a parasite, because it doesn’t take any nutrients from its host. Most orchids and bromeliads, for example, are epiphytes.
